Past Recipients

Bailey Carlisle, daughter of Tom and Jean Carlisle of Janesville, is a 2009 graduate of Northern University High School. During her high school years, Bailey exhibited strong academic, athletic, musical, and leadership abilities, while maintaining a 3.73 grade point average. She lettered in basketball, softball, tennis, and volleyball. As a member of the NU Choir, NU Singers, Concert, Pep and Jazz Bands, she took on leadership roles and earned multiple honors.
Her love for singing and acting has given her many opportunities to share her talents through school events and musicals, Cedar Falls Community Theatre, Sturgis Youth Theater, and the Sturgis Falls Celebration Talent Competition. Bailey’s love for singing got started at the Janesville United Methodist Church. During her Junior High years, she was invited by friends to attend confirmation at St. John Lutheran. She is currently a vocalist in the Student Band at Orchard Hill.

Bailey has worked as a coach for the National Junior Tennis League Summer Camp, sold concessions at the UNI-Dome during football season, and is actively involved in her family’s llama farm. In the fall, Bailey plans to attend the University of Northern Iowa and major in Fitness or Science.
Sam Lilja, son of Pete and Kayann Lilja of Cedar Falls, is a 2009 graduate of Cedar Falls High School. Throughout high school Sam maintained a 4.0 grade point while participating in extra-curricular activities and working. He was dual enrolled at the University of Northern Iowa this past academic year. Sam was active in Student Senate, Junior and Senior Leadership. The past two years he helped guide the student body in the food drive competition against other schools in the Cedar Valley. Sam also participated in Choir, Cantus, Vocal Jazz, Speech Team, and theater productions. He’s known as the “Voice of the Cedar Falls Tiger Marching Band”, announcing pre-game and half-time shows for all the CFHS home games.
The performing arts have been Sam’s forte since he was seven years old and took an acting class at the BlackHawk Children’s Theater. Shortly thereafter, he was cast in his first performance as Fudge in “Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing”. He has appeared onstage in 25 productions throughout the Cedar Valley playhouses.

As a member of First United Methodist Church (FUMC), Sam has been active in youth group and as a Vacation Bible School Leader. He also works as a Media Assistant at FUMC, filming, editing, and producing services to be delivered to local television stations and home-bound church members. Sam plans to attend the University of Northern Iowa and major in the Theater Arts.
Erica Scullin, daughter of James and Mary Scullin of Cedar Falls, is a 2009 graduate of Cedar Falls High School. Erica achieved a cumulative 4.0 GPA, has been dual enrolled in classes at Hawkeye Community College this past year and has taken several AP (Advanced Placement) courses. She has been awarded numerous academic honors and achievements. During her high school career, she participated in Student Senate and was a 3 year member of the Leadership Team which planned such events as Homecoming, Prom, and the Student Food Drive.
Erica loves anything related to water, she has swum competitively for BLAST (Black Hawk Area Swim Team) since she was six years old, was on the CF Women’s Swim Team, managed the CF Men’s Swim Team, and works as a life guard and swimming lessons instructor at The Falls. As a member of the CF Women’s Swim Team, she was a letter winner and a State High School qualifier and participant all four years. She was also the team captain for two years and was named Academic All-State.

In August, Erica plans to attend the University of Northern Iowa and double major in Biology and Biochemistry in preparation for fulfilling her dream of becoming a Doctor.
