2010 Scholarship Recipients
Joey Sevcik is a 2010 Graduate of Cedar Falls High School. He is the son of Joseph and Lisa Sevcik of Cedar Falls. Throughout High School, Joey has maintained a 4.0 Grade point average while taking a full academic load, including Advanced Placement courses. His high school career has been full of activities and leadership opportunities; including Band, Orchestra, Cross Country, Track, Junior Leadership, student body Vice-President, Co-ed Dance Team, and All-Male Dance Team.

In the community, Joey founded the Flash Running Club, ran multiple races ranging from 5K to 20K, has been a 10 year participant in the Cedar Valley Youth Soccer Association and has refereed soccer matches throughout the years. He is an active member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, serving in multiple leadership roles. Joey’s passion for running started when he and other family members ran at the Sturgis Falls 5K nearly 10 years ago.

Prior to starting High School, CFHS Coach, Troy Becker encouraged him to run Cross Country. One of his goals is to run the Boston Marathon. Joey also enjoys playing the piano and participating in the CFHS Drumline.

Some of his favorite Sturgis Falls memories include the 5K run, followed by the Lions Club Pancakes, and the Bill Riley Talent Competition where Joey and his siblings have participated for the past decade.

In August, Joey will head to Ames, where he plans to attend Iowa State University and major in Kinesiology. 
Jessica Riebkes is a 2010 graduate of Cedar Falls High School. She is the daughter of Rodney and Teresa Riebkes of Cedar Falls. She is a Silver Scholar, maintaining a 3.9 grade point average while taking multiple honors and advanced placement classes during her high school career. Jessica has shown leadership in a variety of activities. At Cedar Falls High School she participated in Junior and Senior Leadership and was the Spanish Club Secretary.

In the community she has participated in a broad number of volunteer opportunities and leadership roles. As a member of Orchard Hill Church she has been a Sunday School Teacher for pre-school children, helped in the Nursery, fed college students as a part of the Cook Team, and assisted with Vacation Bible School, as well as attending services and Big House.

As a Girl Scout, Jessica received her Silver Award in 2007 and is working to finish her Gold Award. After completing her Program Aid training in 2005, she has volunteered at a multitude of Girl Scout events to help younger girls, including assisting a group of Kindergarteners in making their vests. Jessica is the Senior Patrol Leader in her Troop. In addition to volunteering and scouting, Jessica enjoys reading, camping, playing the violin and being with family and friends.

Her special Sturgis Falls memory is sitting with hundreds of others as the Marine Band performs at Overman Park.

Jessica plans to attend Central College in Pella in the fall. 
Matt Smith is a 2010 graduate of Waterloo West High School. He is the son of Doug and Margie Smith of Waterloo. During his high school career he maintained a 4.0 grade point average. Throughout high school, Matthew participated in Band, Orchestra, Speech & Drama, Basketball, Track & Field, and Cross Country at West. He held leadership roles in Band and Track.

Away from school, he participated in the Cedar Valley Youth Soccer Association and Cedar Valley Community Church. His love for art started at a young age. As a 2 year-old, Matt starting drawing on a daily basis, going through reams of paper. During his Junior and Senior years, he focused more on painting, using acrylics, and watercolors. His portfolio is expanding.

Matt’s passion for running began when he was a 7th Grader at Hoover Middle School. He, and the other members of the hurdle relay team, set a school record. At West he ran on the Varsity squad, lettering all four years. He ran hurdle events and relays at the Drake Relays and State Track meets.

In the fall, Matt plans to attend Northwestern College in St. Paul, Minnesota and major in Art.


The Sturgis Falls Celebration Board of Directors annually selects three deserving high school seniors from the metropolitan area to receive $1,500.00. The scholarship is aimed at promoting educational opportunities for students who will be attending an accredited college, university or trade school. Please review the following information for eligibility and criteria for receiving the Sturgis Falls Scholarship:

Eligibility
The Sturgis Falls Scholarship is available to a student who:

  • is a senior in high school
  • lives within the metropolitan area (Black Hawk County, IA)
  • has a grade point of 3.00 or higher on a 4.00 scale
Use of Scholarship
The Scholarship amount may not exceed $1,500.00. This may be used to defray tuition, supplies, room and board, or any other college-related costs at an accredited college, university or trade school. The Scholarship will be issued jointly to the institution and the student. The scholarship must be used during the Fall and/or Spring term immediately after receipt by the applicant. No continued scholarship support for the student is implied or stated.

Selection
The Scholarship will be awarded with consideration of the following criteria: 

  • a 500-word typewritten essay that relates the students' goals and aspirations to the spirit of the Sturgis Falls Celebration. Essay must be double spaced in a 12pt font with attention to sentence structure, spelling & grammar.
  • scholastic record and transcript
  • extra-curricular activities and leadership roles
  • verbal references
